Comments: Mary Zarbano was born in Nebraska in 1931. She received her MFA from California State College at Long Beach. Her subsequent studies with Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall in New York led to her developing a Modernism approach to her work. Note the angular lines and planes reminiscent of cubism and the abstracted features of her human subjects. She primarily painted in oils but also worked in other media including etching and monoprints. Over the course of a long career, both as teacher and artist, Zarbano exhibited widely and with success and her work is registered at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery Library in Washington DC.
