COMMENTS: Jean Jacques Pfister (Born 1878 - Basel, Switzerland; Died 1949 - New York City) Pfister immigrated to the United States in 1889 at the age of twenty from from his native Switzerland. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute at the turn of the century and later studied in Germany at the Art School of Bremen, and in New York at the Grand Central School of Art, and the Art Students League. Pfister also studied with Wayman Adams. Pfister was known as a painter of landscapes and aviation scenes. His work "We At Daybreak" is a depiction of the trans-Atlantic flight of Charles Lindbergh. He lived in Laguna Beach California in the 1920's where he painted the scenery of the region, including the local mission churches. During the 1930's Pfister served as associate professor of art on the faculties of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida and Miss Harris College Prep School in Coral Gables, Florida. Pfister died in New York City in 1949.
