Georges Berges - Seashore - Oil on Mahogany Board - Late 19th Century
COMMENTS: Georges Berges (French, 1870-1935) Oil on wood panel, signed lower right. Image size: 15" x 21.5" Ht: 19" Wd: 26" (framed) Georges Bergès was a painter and print maker in France. Berges is known for presenting the "identity markers" of the Basque Country: the rural habitat, the famous "etche", the "exotic" fruits of the country: fig trees, oak, peppers, chestnuts, cherry blossoms, grapes... haystacks: a whole luxuriant nature. He takes up this theme in an original way in compositions that resemble lacquer. He then uses powders, sequins, he sometimes includes mother-of-pearl or precious pearls to describe the splendour of the Basque Country, those skies especially when the setting sun is made of gold, for example.
