Large Antique Mid 19th Century Hispano Moresque Charger With Central Blue Lion. Central cobalt blue lion central motif - a symbol of strength and protection found in both medieval European and Islamic art. The main body of the charger features radially segmented designs illustrating the skill and dexterity of the artist who made this piece. The contrast between the bold blue lion, the copper tones, and the cream-coloured background creates a visually dynamic effect. The back of the charger bears simple concentric red lines and a raised foot, consistent with traditional craftsmanship. Most likely from the mid-19th century, crafted during the Hispano-Moresque revival period in the workshops of Manises or Málaga.

Dimensions: Height 3"; Diameter 18 1/4"

Comments: Hispano-Moresque ceramics emerged in Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) during the 13th century, blending Islamic artistic traditions with local Spanish influences. These ceramics are renowned for their intricate designs and the use of metallic lustre glazes, a technique introduced by Islamic potters. The golden lustre effect, achieved through a complex firing process, imparts a radiant sheen reminiscent of precious metals. In the 19th century, there was a revival of interest in these ceramics, leading to the reproduction of traditional Hispano-Moresque styles that celebrated this unique fusion of cultures.
