Commodes

"Commode" is the 18th Century French word for a cased set of drawers - what is referred to in modern day terms as a "Chest of Drawers". The antique French Commodes are found to be often times decorated with marquetry, inlay and gilt ormolu - purposed for storing clothing and other personal items. In the 18th & 19th Century English speaking world, the term commode also took on the connotation of a bedside cabinet with a space for a chamber pot. As indoor plumbing became more common, the term carried over to the modern toilet. This has created some confusion, but antique enthusiasts still use "commode" to refer to the original elegant antique case of drawers.
