COMMENTS: Exceptional 1940s modernist still life with grapes and apples oil on canvas by important Philadelphia, New York, Rhode Island, and Mt. Bethel Colony artist Esther Pressoir (1902-1986). Pressoir studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York in the 1920s. Pressoir was an illustrator and cartoonist for The New Yorker and other magazines, a highly regarded painter, and a member of the progressive Mt. Bethel Art Colony in Pennsylvania. During the 1920s-1940s, she exhibited at major New York galleries such as the Arthur Newton Gallery, Morton Galleries, the Uptown Gallery, and MacBeth Galleries. In addition she exhibited at the Whitney Museum, the Society of Independent Artists, Salons of America, the 1939 New York World's Fair, and Rockefeller Center, among others. Pressoir's work is in numerous major public and private collections.Although an accomplished artist, Pressoir's work is relatively scarce and remains undervalued.
