Comments: Atanas Katchamakoff was known for his non objective and figural paintings and also as a sculptor. He was born in Leskovetz, Bulgaria on Jan. 18, 1898. Katchamakoff studied at the Sofia Academy of Fine Arts and in Rome with A. Nikola. He immigrated to NYC in 1924 and soon settled in southern California. Initially he worked as a sculptor for the movie studios in Hollywood and in 1929 founded the Palm Springs Art School. He was a resident of Northridge, CA and died on a trip to Bulgaria on Dec. 22, 1988. His work is mostly portrait busts and figures.
