COMMENTS: Georges Rouault (1871 - 1958) Rouault used black outline to reinforce his use of color. This may stem from his teenage years when he was an apprentice to a stain glass maker. Rouault's subject matter dealt with the despair of the downtrodden to which he himself felt a connection to as an artist. He was not closely associated with Fauvism though he did exhibit with artists of that movement. He was born on May 27, 1871 in Paris. His father worked in a piano factory as a cabinet-maker. His grandfather was an art lover and hoped Rouault would become a painter. He attended evening classes at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs, and studied painting at the Louvre. He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Elie Delaunay. He was a pupil of Gustave Moreau.
