Andor Basch (Hungarian, 1885-1944)Circa 1935 Modernist Oil Painting Still Life of Fruit Signed "Basch 35" lower left. Oil on board mounted to stretchers. Stamp on back of panel reads "Kivitelre Engedelyezve O.M. Sz. M."

Comments:  Basch began his studies in 1904 at the drawing school in Budapest under Tivadar Zemplényi.  From 1905-10 he attended the Académie Julian in Paris and was a pupil of Jean Paul Laurens and Henri Matisse.  During a couple of the summer months he visited the artist’ colony Nagybánya.

During World War I he served as a war artist.  From 1920-31 he lived in Paris and Italy and returned to Budapest in 1935 . 

Basch’s works are on display at several museums, such as Bthe Budapest National Gallery and the Budapest Museum of Military History.
