COMMENTS: Raphael Soyer - Soyer was born in Borisoglebsk, Russia in 1899. His family was deported and moved to New York City in 1913. He was a social realist painting everyday scenes of women at work, transients, and unemployed men during the depression. He was famous for his intimate nude studies of women. He studied at Cooper Union and the National Academe of Design and had his first solo show in 1929. Soyer died in 1987 in New York.
